Having fun is important! Working on ourselves doesn’t have to be boring!

What is Equine Assisted Coaching?

Our equine assisted coaching is a trauma-informed approach that uses the connection between humans and horses to support personal growth, self-awareness, and emotional healing. Sessions take place outdoors at Somerset Equus, where nature and horses create a calm, supportive environment. Horses offer immediate, non-judgemental feedback, helping participants reflect and process emotions safely and at their own pace.

How Our Sessions Work

Sessions are hands-on and experiential, helping participants build confidence through interaction with horses. The focus is on connection rather than riding, supported by creative activities and guided coaching.

Who It Supports

We support children, young people, and adults experiencing emotional or mental health challenges, as well as those seeking personal growth. Sessions are tailored to individual needs and often delivered in partnership with families, schools, and professionals.

Our equine assisted coaching is a unique, trauma-informed approach that taps into the special connection between humans and horses to facilitate personal growth, self-discovery, and emotional healing. Unlike traditional coaching or therapy, our sessions unfold outdoors in the presence of our horses, surrounded by the rich and calming natural environment of Somerset Equus. The fields, gardens, and pond are not just a backdrop—they become an integral part of the experience, encouraging participants to connect with nature, reflect, and find inspiration in the world around them. Horses, intuitive and responsive, offer immediate feedback to emotions and behaviors, creating a safe, non-judgmental space for learning and transformation. Our approach is especially supportive for individuals navigating bereavement, self-harm, low self-esteem, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression, as the gentle and restorative environment helps participants process their experiences and emotions at their own pace, fostering a sense of acceptance and hope.

We embrace experiential learning in our programs, inviting participants to engage with horses through varied hands-on activities such as leading, grooming, and navigating obstacle courses. Our sessions are not focused on riding, but on building awareness sharing space and responding to the horses’ cues. In addition to equine interactions, we weave art and craft activities into our sessions indoor and outdoors, enabling individuals to express themselves creatively, deepen their insights, and process experiences in new ways. Supported by our coaches, participants explore themes like communication, trust, boundaries, leadership, and emotional regulation. The combination of animal-assisted and creative, nature-based activities ensures that learning is memorable and meaningful. These activities offer powerful support for those who may be struggling with grief, self-harm, low confidence, or eating disorders, providing healthy, creative outlets and opportunities for self- expression, healing, and rebuilding self-worth.

Equine assisted coaching at Somerset Equus benefits a wide spectrum of people, including children, young people, and adults facing anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, PTSD, bereavement, self-harm, low self-esteem, and eating disorders, or those simply seeking greater self-awareness and resilience. Our approach is particularly supportive for those who find traditional talk therapies less effective or engaging. By working closely with schools, social care professionals, and families, we tailor sessions to address individual goals and needs, ensuring every participant receives the support required for personal growth, confidence, and well-being. The inspiring setting, combined with art, crafts, and nature, helps individuals feel truly empowered to flourish and find renewed hope on their journey toward healing.
